Enjoying the May heatwave safely
The recent warm weather has brought a wonderful sense of energy throughout the home, with residents making the very most of the sunshine while enjoying a variety of outdoor activities, cheerful conversations and peaceful moments in the garden surrounded by nature.
Our manager Kam Kaur says: "As temperatures rise and brighter days become more frequent, spending time outdoors can offer enormous benefits for older adults, particularly when it comes to improving mood, encouraging gentle activity and creating opportunities for social interaction, all of which play an important role in supporting overall wellbeing and helping residents feel connected, relaxed and engaged with the world around them."
Over the last few weeks, the gardens have been full of life and colour, especially during National Bee Day when residents spent time planting Begonias, Foxgloves, Lavender and Sweet Peas, all carefully chosen because they help attract bees and other important pollinators into outdoor spaces. Alongside the planting activities, residents also enjoyed watching a light hearted yet informative programme about bumble bees and the importance of local honey, which sparked plenty of conversation about wildlife, gardening and the changing seasons.
With around a third of bee species now considered threatened because of habitat loss, pesticides, climate change and a reduction in wildflower diversity, activities such as these are a wonderful way for residents to feel involved in supporting local wildlife while also enjoying the calming and rewarding benefits that gardening can bring. Even small actions can make a meaningful difference, and it has been lovely seeing everyone take pride in helping create a more welcoming environment for bees within the garden.
The sunny weather has also provided the perfect opportunity for residents to enjoy refreshments outdoors, with ice lollies, cold drinks and shaded seating helping everyone stay cool and comfortable while still making the most of the fresh air. Kam adds: "Sun hats, SPF and umbrellas have all become essential parts of daily life recently, ensuring that residents can enjoy time outside safely without becoming too hot during the warmest parts of the day.
"For older adults especially, staying safe in the sunshine is incredibly important, as warmer temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, tiredness and overheating if the right precautions are not taken. Encouraging regular drinks throughout the day, offering shaded areas to relax in and planning gentle outdoor activities all help residents remain comfortable while continuing to enjoy the many positive effects of summer weather."
The gardens themselves have become a peaceful place to spend time, with residents enjoying bird watching and keeping a close eye on the resident Great Tit family alongside robins and blackbirds that regularly visit throughout the day. The gentle sound of the fountain, created in memory of Jack Davis, has also added to the calm atmosphere, providing a quiet and reflective space where residents can relax, chat and enjoy the surroundings together.
Alongside the outdoor fun, there have also been plenty of reasons to celebrate indoors too, including a lively game of bowls, VE Day celebrations complete with flags, bunting and homemade cakes, and recognition for the hardworking care team during International Nurses Day. There was also fantastic news for everyone to enjoy as manager Kam was announced as a finalist in this year’s Stars of Social Care Awards, a truly deserved achievement and a proud moment for the whole home.
With the sunshine continuing and summer just around the corner, there is certainly plenty more to look forward to in the weeks ahead.
